A renovation plan of 2016 Rio Olympic stadium has been approved, and the stadium will reopen in 2014, the official website of Organizing Committee of Rio Olympic Games reported on July 26.
“The renovation proposal that has been chosen offers the advantage of a shorter interruption period. It will allow fans to safely attend matches by the first half of next year, while meeting all health and safety guidelines,” Rio’s urban development watchdog Riourbe said in a statement.
Built in 2007, the stadium is set to have its capacity increased from 47,000 to 60,000 at the Rio Olympics.
Riourbe added that additional reconstruction and refurbishment, unrelated to the roof, would begin in 2015 to meet International Olympic Committee guidelines.
